As you might already know (and might have seen on my Instagram), we ate a lot when we were in Bali. I usually find it quite challenging to find good restaurants when I am on vacation and especially in Asia I always had a lot of problems. But in Bali, everything was surprisingly delicious, and the choice was super large. I could have eaten at many more restaurants, but we didn’t have enough time on the island 😉 Today I want to share some of the restaurants we tried, and I can recommend. Some of them serve only breakfast and lunch, others have just lunch and dinner, and others are open from morning till night.
Most of the restaurants have very healthy meal options, and I always saw at least one gluten-free and/ or vegan option. So if you are vegan, you won’t have any problems to find something to eat. It also isn’t difficult to eat healthy in Bali. I usually always crave for ice cream in summer, but in Bali, I didn’t think of it once. All the smoothie bowls I ate were refreshing and sweet enough, I didn’t need anything else.
Where to eat in Canggu
Nalu Bowls
I don’t know how many times we went to Nalu Bowls, but it was many! They only serve smoothie bowls, but damn it, they are the best in Bali! I tried several ones and believed me; no one was as good as the smoothie bowls at Nalu Bowls. My favorite one is the Uluwatu bowl with pink dragon fruit, topped with strawberries, mango, coconut flakes, their homemade granola, bananas, and honey. They have five more options, all of them super delicious and freshly made.
Dandelion
We went to Dandelion on our first evening in Canggu and couldn’t have made a better choice. They have a small menu, and the portions are quite small, but everything we had tasted very good. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what I had, but it was something with chicken and sweet potatoes.
I would say Dandelion is a semi-fine dining restaurant, so you probably won’t go there every evening. But it is a nice place to have a romantic dinner with your boyfriend or girlfriend. It also is a nice option, if you can’t see all the typical Balinese cafés in Canggu anymore and need a change. For us, it was the best start to our two-week vacation there. We didn’t know what to expect from all the other restaurants, and the dishes at Dandelion sounded very European and therefore familiar 😉
Cafe Organic
Café Organic is one of the cafés I discovered through Instagram. I have to admit; I got influenced by all the Instagrammers who went there and shared there delicious looking dishes. They only serve breakfast and lunch, have a wide choice of smoothies and fresh juices as well as smoothie and salad bowls as well as several egg dishes and much more. It is for sure that you will find something to eat at Café Organic. I actually couldn’t decide what to eat and went for the Acai Coco Bowl the first time and the Africa Bowl the second time. I definitely liked the Acai Coco bowl better than the Africa and I still think that Nalu Bowls are better, but they were very delicious as well. My boyfriend had the Smashed Avo toast, and this was very good as well. I also really liked the Iced Matcha Latte as well as the simple Iced Latte. Inside the café, you can also find energy bowls with different flavors. I tried the peanut butter one and guys; I would recommend trying it as well! The peanut butter energy ball was fantastic!
Gypsy
Gypsy was one of my favorite cafés because it doesn’t seem to be as hyped as the other ones. It is a little bit closer to the beach and further away from the main road where you can find all the other restaurants. Maybe that’s the reason why it never was as crowded as the other places we went to. That doesn’t mean, that the food isn’t good there. I actually liked it better than Café Organic! They have a smaller menu, but a great choice as I think. They have different toast and egg dishes as well as smoothie bowls and pancakes. I tried one of their smoothie bowls (but can’t remember which one) as well as the pancakes and the banana bread. The banana bread was a little bit dry, but it was served with ice cream, and peanut butter, as well as honey, nuts and bananas and everything combined, was perfect. I also can recommend the eggplant as well as the avocado toast for those who don’t like all those sweet things 🙂
Shady Shack
Unfortunately, we only tried dinner at Shady Shack even though the breakfast menu sounded very good. We tried to get a table in the morning, but it was too crowded. So yep, if you want to eat at Shady Shack you should schedule some waiting time. 😉 When we went there for an early dinner around 6 pm, we didn’t have a problem to get a table. I can’t say that much about the choice and all the dishes they serve, but the salad bowls are great! I had the Nori bowl which contains veggie nori rolls, shiitake mushrooms, pickled ginger, edamame, snow peas, wakame, fresh greens and cucumber with miso dressing and Japanese fried rice.
Where to eat in Seminyak
Honey Bee’s
After staying in Canggu, we found it a little bit difficult to find nice restaurants in Seminyak. Our first choice was Honey Bee’s, nothing spectacular, but surprisingly good. They only serve local food, nothing super healthy or fancy. It was such a difference to what we ate the other days, but it tasted very good and was a nice change. I also enjoyed eating local food and getting to know a little bit more about the food culture in Bali. Additionally, eating there is very cheap. We paid around 10 Euro for two people, including food and drink.
Kynd
Kynd is another café you can see all over Instagram and yep, I just had to try it. Unfortunately, it is one of those hyped places, which are good but not THAT good. Maybe it’s the high expectations that make you feel a little bit disappointed; I don’t know. And maybe that’s the reason why we went there only once and didn’t come back.
But that doesn’t mean, that Kynd isn’t a good café. The food was delicious, the staff super kind and the choice of dishes is good as well. If you have seen it on Instagram as well and wanted to go there, you definitely won’t waste your money on bad food. But just don’t have too high expectations 🙂
Principle
Principle is part of the Eat Company in Bali and is a little bit more high-priced than other restaurants in Bali. They offer breakfast and brunch as well as dinner and have only a small menu. We went there for dinner, and it was very good! I had one of their salad bowls, and my boyfriend went for a steak. They also serve pasta and small dishes, so if you are not vegan or vegetarian, you will for sure find something you like.
Bo & Bun
Bo & Bun is another restaurant of the Eat Company and located next to Principle, but with another concept. At Bo & Bun, they serve Asian food based on Vietnamese cooking. I actually liked it better than Principle and found a lot of dishes I wanted to try on the menu. In the end, I went to the Pad Thai, because I was craving for it. The last time I ate a very good Pad Thai was in Thailand in 2016… and the one I had at Bo & Bun can for sure compete with the ones you get in Thailand 😉 My boyfriend had the rips, and they were super good as well. In addition to these two dishes, they also serve Pho, other Wok as well as grilled dishes, salads, and The “Buns.”
Mrs Sippy
On our last day, we went to a beach club called Mrs. Sippy. We had to check out at noon and didn’t know where to go, so a beach club seemed to be the best place and it was! I definitely would suggest spending at least one day at a beach club, because it is a lot of fun. We went to Mrs. Sippy in Seminyak, but it actually isn’t located next to the beach. We didn’t mind at all because they have a big pool as well as comfortable sun beds. You can also eat at Mrs. Sippy and can go there for breakfast, lunch or dinner only as well. We had some small bites there, and everything tasted very good. It is a little bit more pricy but worth the money. I tried one of the smoothies as well as an avocado toast, and it was the best I had in Bali.
Where to eat in Kuta
Crumb & Coaster
Kuta is very touristy, and we had problems finding nice restaurants there. Crumb & Coaster was the best-rated restaurant on Tripadvisor in our area, so we wanted to give it a try. It’s nothing special and doesn’t look that nice, but the food was great. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner and we went there for a late lunch/ early dinner. Breakfast is served all day and includes pancakes as well as avocado toast as some classics. For lunch and dinner, you can choose between salads, sandwiches, pasta as well as Indonesian dishes. I had the zoodles and didn’t regret choosing them.
Fat Chow
The last restaurant we went to in Kuta was Fat Chow, and it was my favorite there. They serve Chinese food with a twist at a very cool location. It is located in a small street behind the big hotels in Kuta and was super crowded when we went. We had to wait a couple of minutes to be seated, but it was worth the wait. Everything on the menu sounds delicious, and I couldn’t decide what to get. I ended up with trying the Satay Chicken, and my boyfriend had the Chicken Cashew Stir Fry. I liked the dish my boyfriend had a little bit better, but just because it was a little bit more than the Satay Chicken 😉
